Kim Sou: Seen Somewhere draws its inspiration from Kim Sou (1919–2014)’s 1980 work, A Face Seen Somewhere. Through a curated selection of self-portraits, figure paintings, portraits, and photographic archives, this exhibition explores how an artist gazed at people, and reflected on himself.
The exhibition unfolds in two distinct sections. The first, Seen Somewhere, traces how the artist gazed at others, observing the process by which a person is distilled into a lasting impression and memory on the canvas. These faces—familiar yet elusive—reveal the unique gaze and sensibility captured by the artist.
The second section, Portraits of the Painter, centers on self-portraits and photographic archives to illuminate how the painter perceived himself and shaped the course of his life. The traces of his time, lived both as a human being and an artist, emerge through the harmony between his works and the archives.
