    Highlights of Modern Painting: Portraits of an Era gathers twenty works by fourteen artists, from Surrealism through abstraction to what came after, in three parts: dreamlike worlds found in the wreckage of war, by Paul Delvaux and Marc Chagall; abstraction in colour, line and geometry, from Willem de Kooning to Peter Halley; and the return of the figure, with David Hockney, Nicolas Party and George Condo.
